2We report on new mosasaurid remains, namely isolated teeth, from the Upper Maastrichtian shallow marine environment of Albaina in the Laño quarry (Condado de Treviño). The new specimens belong mostly to mosasaurines, i.e., Mosasaurus hoffmanni, Prognathodon solvayi, Prognathodon sectorius, and to the russellosaurine plioplatecarpine Platecarpus cf. ictericus. Prognathodon solvayi and Platecarpus cf. ictericus were previously known from Albaina. This is the first mention in the site of Mosasaurus hoffmanni, widespread in Maastrichtian outcrops located around palaeolatidude 30-40°N, from New

4Paleontologists in Morocco have found fossil fragments from a previously undescribed genus and species of symmoriiform shark that lived during the Late Devonian epoch. Ferromirum oukherbouchi reconstructed in association with invertebrates (orthocerid cephalopods and thylacocephalans) from the Devonian of Maider region, Morocco. Image credit: Frey et al., doi: 10.1038/s42003-020-01394-2. The newly-identified shark, Ferromirum oukherbouchi, swam in Earth’s oceans some 365 million years ago (Devonian period). It had a slender body measuring about 33cm (13 inches) in length, very large eyes and

8This huge great white shark, named Nukumi, is probably about 50 years old. She was discovered off the coast of Nova Scotia.(Image: © OCEARCH) Marine biologists have discovered an enormousgreat white sharkthey're calling the "queen of the ocean" off the coast of Nova Scotia. The battle-scarred shark (Carcharodon carcharias) is 17 feet (5 meters) long and weighs in at 3,541 pounds (1,606 kilograms). She's likely 50 years old, said scientists with the marine animal tracking nonprofit OCEARCH. "When you look at all the healed-over scars and blotches and things that are on h

4A closeup of the skinless shark's body and toothless mouth(Image: © Mulas et al.) In July 2019, fishers trawling the Mediterranean Sea south of Sardinia, Italy, accidentally pulled a mutant from the depths. Ensnared in their net among hundreds of other fish, sharks and assorted marine life was a blackmouth catshark (Galeus melastomus) — seemingly born without skin or teeth. While scientists have reported numerous cases of albinism, discoloration and other genetic skin mutations in sharks before, this rare catch is the first and only known case of a shark living with a "severe lack

1Throughout their evolution, tetrapods have repeatedly colonised a series of ecological niches in marine ecosystems, producing textbook examples of convergent evolution. However, this evolutionary phenomenon has typically been assessed qualitatively and in broad-brush frameworks that imply simplistic macroevolutionary landscapes. We establish a protocol to visualize the density of trait space occupancy and thoroughly test for the existence of macroevolutionary landscapes. We apply this protocol to a new phenotypic dataset describing the morphology of short-necked plesiosaurians, a major compone
